Emergency Procedures

We prepare for everything so your children don't have to worry. In the unlikely event of an emergency, our drivers are trained to follow these important steps to keep everyone safe.

Stay Calm

The most important thing for students to do is stay calm and avoid shouting, which helps the driver focus on the situation.

Follow Driver and Monitor Directions

Drivers and Monitors are trained to give clear instructions during emergencies. Students should always listen carefully and follow their lead.

Exit Quickly & Safely

If an evacuation is needed, students should leave their belongings and exit through the nearest safe door or emergency exit.

Safe Steps for Parents

Helping your child stay safe starts with simple habits. Talk through these rules together to build confidence for every ride.

  • Early Arrival: Be at the stop at least 5 minutes before the bus arrives.
  • The Safe Zone: Teach your child to stay 10 big steps away from the curb.
  • Eye Contact: Always make eye contact with the driver before crossing.
  • Quiet Entry: Remind children to board calmly and find their seat quickly.
  • Stay Seated: Keep bags in laps and stay seated until the bus full stops.

My Safety Checklist

Wait for the stop arm

The Danger Zone is the area around a school bus where students may be harder for the driver to see. This includes the front of the bus, both sides, and the area behind the bus. These areas are especially important during loading and unloading, when students are entering, exiting, or crossing near the vehicle.

At JML Transit, safety around the bus is a key part of our future training and rider education. Students should always wait for the driver’s signal before crossing, stay visible, avoid walking too close to the bus, and never return to the bus for dropped items without getting help from an adult.

To help reduce risk, JML Transit will focus on safe loading and unloading procedures, proper street-crossing steps, clear driver communication, and making sure drivers know where every rider is before moving the bus. Small safety habits can make a big difference in protecting Pre-K students, individuals with disabilities, and all riders we serve.
